The Nutter Families of Pendleside
Henry Towneley of Dutton Hall died 1645 married Alice Colthurst dtr of Abraham , gent, of Burnley. Their daughter Anne Towneley is shown in Dugdale’s visitations of 1644 as marrying Ellis Nutter of Waterside (by river at bottom Clitheroe Rd, Brierfield) Reedley. Upon the death of Alice Nutter’s grandson Henry Nutter, alias Hartley (illigit) his share of the Nutter properties descends to the Nutters of Waterside. The other Nutter properties descend through Henry’s sister Elen Nutter who married James Robinson. Their share possibly passed to the Robinsons of Dam head in Roughlee - probably where the Nutter home of Crowtrees was.
History of Lancashire Volume 6:
1507 Ellis Nutter devises New Laund to Robert Nutter for £6:13:4 per annum
1527 the New Laund rent was held equally between Ellis Nutter of Waterside (Reedley), John Haliday and John Nowell
1530 Henry Nutter complains that his younger brother touched his title to tenements in New Laund and Reedley Hallows.
1609 rental of this tenement descended to John Nutter. John Nutter living in 1592 was the son of John Nutter who was the son of Ellis Nutter.
Eleanor Nutter, the daughter of Ellis Nutter, was reputedly the grandmother of Archbishop Tillotson
