Waltons of Walverden and Colne

Obituary Nelson Leader Dec 16th 1904:

Death of Mr.William Walton of Walverden House

Took place at 28 Leyland Road, Southport, his residence there for the last 6 months owing to ill health.

He was born in Colne July 1st 1833 and in his early years was sent to a well-known school of the day at West Marton, then for ¾ years to Giggleswick School where he completed his education under the late Dean Howson. He then chose for his calling that of an ironmonger and was apprenticed with the firm of Whitaker & Dixon Ltd; Colne.

In 1861 he commenced business in Burnley on his own account in the premises now occupied by Messrs. Ward & Co of St.James Street. This concern flourished and some 5/6 years later he purchased the ironmongery business of the late Mr. James Eastham and Mr. Hartley Wildman and for a period conducted his concern at 75 St.James Street. In addition to these premises he established a warehouse at Newtown Mills on Stanley Street where the purely iron and steel trade was carried out. With marked business capacity and indomitable energy he gradually built up and developed one of the largest and best-known iron and steel merchants businesses in East Lancashire. He retired from active association in the business and in 1890 left it in the charge of his son.

He married in 1859 at St.Johns in Great Marsden Elizabeth the only daughter of Mr.John Mancknowles of Townhouse and Nunclough and who was a member of an old and distinguished family of yeomen. They had settled upon and farmed their own land in and about the district of Great Marsden for over 400 years.

During the time William was in business in Burnley he lived at South Parade, Manchester Road, Burnley (now occupied by Dr.Sinclair) until he purchased Walverden House, Nelson 23 years ago from Mr. B.Chaffer.

Nelson was at this time in its infancy and Mr.Walton, perceiving its natural advantages, confidently entered into many of the industrial enterprises.More especially in past 15 years, in conjunction with his son Mr. Henry Mancknowles Walton J.P, never ceased in the active development of their Nelson estates in such a way as to contribute to the phenomenal growth of the town. They were pioneers of many room & power concerns, included amongst which are the Bankfield, Oak Bank and Hendon mills representing approx. 5/6000 looms.

He was a very considerable landowner in Nelson and in one part of his estate he built a large number of substantial cottages. Besides this he owned a large amount of land at Clapham. Yorkshire, which estate he visited frequently, taking a keen interest in anything pertaining to agriculture. He was an exceedingly good judge of cattle and took an intelligent interest in his tenantry, being able to appreciate their difficulties so that his relationship with them was naturally happy. At many of the local agricultural shows his stock carried off the prizes and he frequently exhibited at the Royal Lancashire Show.

For a long period he was a member of the Hackney Society, London and often visited their shows. He was a great benefactor to St.Johns donating £500 to the restoration 8 years ago, he was a Warden there. He also took a prominent part in the formation of St.Philips Church being one of four people who purchased the iron building. Due to him the Ambulance movement possesses the hall which is so useful to them.

Mr.Walton died October 5th 1894, he leaves 3 sons and 5 daughters. Family mourners were: Mr.H.M.Walton, Mr.Bert, Miss E. & Mr. & Mrs. Charles, Misses Mary,Julia,Ida Walton, Mr John Whitaker J.P, Mr. Cornelius Smith, Mr. William Whittaker, Mr. A.K.Smith. Wreath from Mr.& Mr. C.Walton.
